Former Tannery Waste Disposal Site

Berkshire Regional Planning Commission; Massachusetts

OBJECTIVES

Roux designed and implemented a Stage II Environmental Risk Characterization for a 12.6-acre undeveloped former tannery waste disposal area under the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP). Located on the bank of the Hoosic River and containing forested areas, wetlands, and streams, the City of North Adams plans to redevelop the Site into a recreational area for the community using funding from MassDevelopment.

Previous investigations identified metals arsenic, chromium, and lead impacts associated with waste disposed at the Site. Soil and sediment samples were collected to determine the extent of tannery-related impacts and evaluate the potential risk to the ecological community at the Site. Data from this investigation is being used to focus potential future remediation to allow the creation of the recreational area for the community.
