Abandoned Oil Well Investigation

International Non-profit Organization; Peru

OBJECTIVES

Roux investigated the area around several abandoned oil extraction wells that had previously discharged contaminated water into a small stream that was used for water supply by a nearby village. The stream then discharged into Lake Titicaca. The contaminated drainage contained arsenic, oil, and salt. The wells had recently been sealed and the discharge stopped; however, the contamination had impacted the soil adjacent to the wells and presented a direct contact hazard, particularly to children attending a nearby school. Roux undertook a soil sampling program to determine the degree and extent of the contaminated soil and then developed remediation plans to address the direct contact hazard. The remediation, including consolidation and capping, was carried out by a local contractor.
