Simply defined, Phytoremediation is the use of vegetation for the in situ treatment of contaminated media (i.e., groundwater, surface water, soils and sediments). Also termed “Nature’s Pump and Treat”, it is a rapidly evolving “green” technology that is gaining widespread support as an alternative to more costly conventional approaches. As a passive remedial technology, it offers the additional benefits of low OM&M costs and in applications utilizing trees, carbon sequestration credits. Presently, over 160 species of trees, grasses and aquatic plants have been identified as “Phytotechnology Species”.

Roux Associates has amassed over 10 years of project-specific experience in applying Phyto technologies at contaminated sites (17 years when CTW applications are included). We have applied the technology to:

  • Intercept, hydraulically stabilize and bioremediate contaminated groundwater plumes;
  • Bioremediate contamination in the vadose zone;
  • Sequester and immobilize contaminants in the plant rhizosphere (i.e., root zone);
  • Manage and treat stormwater runoff;
  • Replace conventional RCRA caps with “living” phyto caps over landfilled areas; and
  • Treat and consumptively utilize process wastewater to reduce off-site discharges.

Since 1998, Roux Associates has planted over 65,000 trees in support of the above remedial objectives. Our clients have saved millions of dollars in capital and OM&M costs in selecting a Phyto alternative in lieu of conventional techniques. We look forward to the opportunity of doing the same for you.
