Roux Associates has provided assessment and remediation services to a major oil company at a large petroleum bulk storage terminal located in eastern Massachusetts. The terminal, which has been active for over 100 years, is approximately 30 acres in size, and receives petroleum products via marine shipments.

Services provided by Roux Associates have included:

  • Completion of a Supplemental Phase II Comprehensive - Site Assessment (CSA) which involved subsurface investigation both on- and off-site, ongoing sampling and monitoring of over 100 monitoring wells, evaluation of tidal impacts to local groundwater flow, and a Risk Assessment for the Site
  • Design and completion of a Remedial Action Plan which included remedial measures to address both multiple LNAPL and DNAPL plumes across the Site
  • Evaluation and implementation of regulatory closure for portions of the Site
  • Construction oversight of work in contaminated areas of the Site
  • Management of remediation waste generated at the Site


As part of these response actions, Roux Associates has designed, installed and is currently operating two substantial remediation systems. One of these systems is a groundwater recovery and soil vapor extraction system installed to remediate petroleum impacts from the saturated and vadose zones in the active loading rack area. This system consists of up to 20 dual-phase groundwater recovery/soil vapor extraction wells and 18 single-phase soil vapor extraction wells. The other system is a product recovery system which includes up to 20 autoseeking product recovery pumps which are rotated between various recovery wells in multiple areas of the Site. To date, this system has recovered approximately 400,000 gallons of recyclable jet fuel.

In addition, other major response actions performed have included:
 

  • Inspection and maintenance of sorbent booms deployed to mitigate a sheen emanating from the Site
  • Design and implementation of a well vacuum program to include multiple high-intensity vacuum events at up to 16 wells across the Site
  • Coordination of biannual groundwater monitoring program which include the gauging and sampling of up to 100 wells located across the entire Site


Due to the large scale aspects of this Site, this project has required coordination of considerable resources, evaluation of environmental priorities, technical and health and safety training of staff, a knowledgeable engineering and hydrological background, coordination of field activities, budgetary management and client care. Roux Associates has successfully managed all of these aspects of this project.
