Roux Associates conducted oversight activities of an insured’s consultant at a former dry cleaner in Alabama. The insured’s consultant identified a plume of contamination that extended 2,500 ft from the site, and prepared a $3 million plan to remediate the plume via in-situ bioremediation. Upon Roux’s review, it became apparent that there were other sources of contamination in the area that were contributing to the groundwater plume that were responsible for the majority of the plume. The insured was getting pressured by the State regulator to clean up the entire plume.

Upon further investigation, it was determined that the former dry cleaner was only responsible for about 20 percent of the plume that was originally mapped by the insured’s consultant. After negotiating a revised cleanup plan with the State, the cost to remediate the insured’s portion of the plume was determined to be about $1 million.
