Roux Associates provided environmental support to the design and construction of a Northeast Corridor High Speed Rail System through: Phase I/II ESAs; technical Support for construction and permitting including storm-water management; sewer system valuation/remediation; groundwater quality investigations/modeling to support construction dewatering; development of plans to address unforeseen environmental contingencies; and negotiations with regulatory agencies. Services were conducted at several major rail yards including the Ivy City Yard, near Washington, D.C., Southhampton Street Yard in Boston, and Sunnyside Yard in New York City. The projects consisted of soil and groundwater investigations to support the siting and construction of various service and inspections (S&I) buildings car washer/deicer buildings and infrastructure construction such as new tracks, turnouts and catenary pole relocations.

Roux Associates performed a stormwater recharge area investigation for the high speed rail S&I Building located at Sunnyside Yard. The purpose of the investigation was to assist in the placement and design of the building roof stormwater collection system and infiltration gallery. The infiltration gallery was intended to spread the generated stormwater over a large surface area while allowing a relatively shallow depth of burial. The scope of work consisted of identification of NYC Building and Administration Code requirements, a soil boring program, temporary piezometer installation, and an infiltration testing program. The infiltration testing was performed in accordance with the ASTM standard field method using double-ring infiltrometers. The results allowed the design of an infiltration gallery that could accommodate stormwater drainage associated with the new building.
