Ms. Kmetzo is a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology, and leads the risk assessment team at Roux Associates, Inc. She has 12 years of experience as a risk assessment consultant, as well as experience in academic and commercial laboratories, including as a laboratory safety officer. She holds a Masters in Public Health in Environmental Health and Epidemiology/Biostatistics from Boston University and a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry from Middlebury College. Ms. Kmetzo has conducted and managed risk assessments under a variety of regulatory frameworks, modeled fate and transport of contaminants, assessed exposure to toxicants, evaluated toxicity of a range of chemicals, developed risk estimates and remediation criteria, evaluated potential for links between exposures and medical outcomes, developed statistical approaches to assess and compare data, communicated potential for health risks, and performed product safety assessments. Ms Kmetzo has been an expert witness in cases involving the source, timing, and transport of contaminant releases, toxicology, medical monitoring, and products liability.

Representative Projects

• Risk Assessment: Conducted or managed site-specific risk assessments at numerous disposal sites contaminated with VOCs, SVOCs, petroleum, and metals, for industrial and major oil clients. Assessments included evaluating source media, contaminant transport, exposure media, and various human and ecological receptors. Co-taught risk assessment course to environmental professionals.

• Products Liability: Performed probabilistic risk assessment on nationally-marketed fertilizer. Assessed products liability risks associated with consumer products (including personal care products, foods, building materials, toys, electronics, and equipment). Reviewed medical records to determine whether illness was related to exposure to chemicals in a product. Taught course (for CLE credit) on toxicity and federal action associated with nanotechnology and its use in products.

• Toxicology: Developed toxicity factors and a drinking water guideline for an uncommon chemical. Prepared fact sheets to communicate toxicity of contaminants to the public. Evaluated toxicity of VOCs, SVOCs, metals and petroleum fractions via dermal, ingestion, and inhalation exposures.

• Remediation Criteria Setting: Developed site-specific risk-based cleanup goals for numerous sites in the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions.

• Statistical Evaluations: Used statistical approaches to develop compliance limits at a federal site, demonstrate compliance with standards at hazardous waste sites, determine whether site conditions were significantly different than local conditions at numerous properties, and identify appropriate estimates of exposure.

• Vapor Intrusion Modeling: Modeled vapor intrusion from subsurface to indoor air using a variety of techniques, including the Johnson & Ettinger model. Modeled transport of contaminants from sediment and surface water to shellfish and finfish to assess potential human health impacts. Participant in Massachusetts vapor intrusion workgroup, and contributed to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Indoor Air Sampling and Evaluation Guide.
