Former Manufacturing Facility
Yonkers, New York
Roux Associates was retained to characterize PCB and lead contamination on various surfaces within a former manufacturing facility located on the Hudson River in Yonkers, New York. As an initial step, we designed and implemented a pilot study to evaluate commercially available decontamination products and identify the most efficient product to mitigate contaminant levels in various locations throughout the site.
The remediation of interior surfaces within the building proceeded in phases as portions of the building were required for occupancy by a tenant leasing space from our client. In support of the first phase of the decontamination, Roux Associates prepared bid packages; retained the services of a decontamination contractor; and oversaw activities for cleaning, removal, and disposal of site-related contaminants from designated surface areas within the facility. All decontamination work was conducted in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
In several areas of the facility, the contractor used combination of hand scraping, scarifying, vacuuming, and pressure washing to remove surface accumulation and decontaminate floor and wall surfaces in designated areas. Following this work, Roux Associates collected post-decontamination samples, which were used to delineate areas that required further attention. These areas were then encapsulated using heavy-duty epoxy paint. All water generated during the decontamination activities was contained and temporarily stored onsite prior to proper disposal.
Roux Associates prepared a comprehensive RI that describes the investigation activities performed to delineate the nature and extent of contamination at the site and identifies and evaluates remedial alternatives. In addition, a comprehensive human health based risk assessment was performed to assist in determining site-specific interior cleanup levels to support future tenant occupancy scenarios.
